*Peter Pan
(picture taken Feb 2008) Click here for more pictures of Peter in May 2007 What is one of the first things that people look for when buying a pony? Is it size, color, "cuteness"? Oh sure, all those things are considered. But without fail, the one thing that most people are looking for first in a pony is temperament ! After all, without a good disposition children's ponies would all be destined to be "nasty, little creatures" that try to swipe the kid off on the nearest tree branch or fence railing.. LOL.. We all know ponies like that, and very few people want to buy one for their child or to use one to sire their pony foal. When I bred my favorite pony mare, *Prince's Shallyandra, to the Champion Pinto Pony, Abita Magic, I knew one thing for sure, that the resulting pony foal would have a temperament to die for. Three years after *Peter Pan was born, I know for sure that I was not wrong in my thinking. I knew when *Peter was 2 weeks old and we took him to visit the local elementary school that he was special, and I hoped that he would keep his stunning disposition as he matured. *Peter has not disappointed me.
(Above picture taken May 2007) The following is an excerpt from an email I wrote to a friend about *Peter in January of 2007. Keep in mind that this was written about a 3 yr old stallion and a 13 yr old kid. *Peter has always been handled in passing day to day care, but not extensively. I let my babies be babies and do not "work them" until they grow up (age 3 usually). At the time this was written, he had received NO ground work preparation for riding and no "de-spooking" work. We literally grabbed him out of the field, dirty and unworked and away we went.
<<<<THIS is what happens when the
kids and I are stuck home all day in the ice and snow.. When the weather
finally cleared a bit I went out to fix an open gate (Thanks Marq for opening
it.. AGAIN!) and grabbed Peter.. figured there was no time like the present to
teach him to lead properly.. and heck might as well start desensitizing him to
plastic bags.. So I grabbed the pony, grabbed a BIG bag (a wood pellet bag)
and flapped it all over him. He didn't even blink.. barely moved away.. Heck..
that was quick. a 10 second desensitizing session.. and he was DONE!! cool..
Well, heck he might as well walk up to get the mail with me.. work on his
leading, right?.. So we treked to the house to let everyone know where we were
going.. Oh wait!! Anne wants to come with me.. Ok.. that's cool. "Hey
Anne!! Wanna ride the pony?" "yeah sure that would be
cool" 5 minutes later after we drapped her over him a bit she was up
and riding.. man, I love these horses!!! so off to get the mail we went..
Peter walking carefully, thinking hard about what the heck was happening to
him.. but not making a wrong move.. At the mailbox I put a neck rope on him
and she taught him (sort of) to stop and neck rein a bit.. On the way home he
got confused with the neck rope.. Did you know that when you try to use a neck
rope to make em go sideways, it pulls back on the bottom of his neck? hmm poor
pony. he was trying to do what she was telling him, she would "ask"
for him to turn and he would pivot and back up .opps not what Anne had in
mind... Ok.. no neck rope. tied the lead to the halter.. AHHHH.. much better!!
"Hey Anne!! wanna trot?" "oh yeah. sure mom".. Come
on Pete trot.. you can do it... Ok.. trot.. 5 steps. no problem.. 10
steps no problem.. picking up speed now.. kid starting to bounce.. hmmmm pony
thinks that is a bit scary.. Trots faster!! yikes.. mom stops pony and kid
before it becomes a first wreck, instead of a first ride.. Rest of ride goes
off without a hitch.. Whew!!! >>>>>
(above pictures taken Jan. 2007) This young stallion is simply one in a million!!! You will not find a better temperament in a pony stallion out there. Ok.. enough about *Peter's outstanding disposition (sorry, I had to "plug" it again, it really is spectacular!!). *Peter also has wonderful conformation and movement. He was inspected as a foal with Curly Sporthorse International and was awarded First Premium status, as well as winning the "Site Champion Young Stock " AND the "CSI National Youngstock Champion". He was the top scoring foal in the nation in 2004. With luck, he will be presented at a CSI stock inspection in 2007 for his adult inspection. Peter will be "properly" put under saddle as well as trained to drive this summer as we start to promote this most promising young Curly. If you are looking to breed to a pony with both an outstanding disposition as well as great movement and conformation, *Peter Pan is the stallion for your mare.
